Description
The 2020 update to the National Building Code included major changes to energy efficiency requirements for small buildings. This free course, developed by RSM Building Consultants in partnership with the Alliance of Canadian Building Officials’ Associations and Natural Resources Canada, takes learners through these new requirements using videos, checklists, quizzes, and interactive learning content.
Participants will begin by learning how and when to apply the new code provisions, followed by a brief module on building science. Next, the course will use examples to take learners through the requirements for each tier of both prescriptive and performance compliance pathways. Air tightness, energy modelling, and practical applications are integrated throughout the course to ensure participants come away with the confidence they need to apply what they have learned during both plans review and inspection of new homes.

Description
The 2020 National Energy Code for Buildings (NECB) introduced significant updates to energy efficiency standards for buildings across Canada. Developed by RSM in partnership with the Alliance of Canadian Building Officials’ Associations and Natural Resources Canada, this free course guides learners through the structure and application of the 2020 NECB. Participants begin by exploring the code’s organization and compliance pathways—prescriptive, trade-off, performance, and tiered—before diving into detailed modules on the building envelope, lighting, HVAC systems, service water heating, and electrical power. Each module uses real-world examples and code references to build a practical understanding of compliance requirements.
Throughout the course, learners will deepen their knowledge of key energy performance concepts, such as U-values, lighting power density, and air barrier standards. The content emphasizes code compliance not only for new construction but also for additions and alterations to existing buildings. Interactive elements, including activities and quizzes, help participants reconcile what they’ve learned. By the end of the course, participants will be better equipped to design, assess, and enforce the energy efficiency requirements of the NECB with confidence.
