Soft Skills, Footings, and Foundations
Course
Module 1
Framing and fire separations are a big part of what you’ll see during inspections, but they’re not always easy to interpret on site.
You’re often looking at partially completed work, trying to understand how everything fits together and whether something needs closer attention.
This module is designed to help you make sense of what you’re seeing, so you can approach these inspections with clarity and confidence.
The Inspectors' Technique Suite was developed by RSM in partnership with the Ontario Building Officials Association.

The Inspectors' Technique Suite: Framing and Fire Separations module shows you what to pay attention to when you’re on site during framing and fire separation inspections.
It walks through common framing details, fire separation requirements, and how these elements come together on site, so you can better understand what you’re looking at and what needs closer attention.
- Instructor-led lessons that break down key concepts
- On-site inspection walkthroughs showing real framing and fire separation conditions
- Common issues, mistakes, and details that are easy to miss

If you’re just getting started, this training helps you feel more comfortable in the field.
You’ll learn what to look for, how to approach inspections, and how to handle real situations that come up on site. It’s designed to give you a clear starting point so you’re not figuring everything out on your own.
Inspectors building confidence in the field
Maybe you’ve done a number of inspections but still feel unsure in certain situations.
This suite helps you develop a more consistent approach, so you’re not second-guessing what you’re seeing or how to respond.
Experienced Inspectors & Mentors
If you’re responsible for training others, this gives you a structured way to explain how inspections are actually carried out.
It can also help you refine your own process and make your approach more consistent across your team.
Municipal teams looking for consistency
For departments training new staff or trying to align inspection approaches across the team, this provides a practical, consistent foundation everyone can follow.
You’ll have access to the course for your full access period, giving you time to move through the material at your own pace and revisit sections as needed.
1 course = 45 days
2 course bundle = 90 days
4 course bundle = 180 days

If you’ve ever had to train someone or explain your approach, it likely is.
Many experienced inspectors use this module to refine how they communicate and to build a more consistent way of mentoring newer staff.
